Tax Relief Information
Each year the Irish Revenue Commissioners allows Irish charities to claim tax back on behalf of donors. This is tax relief that can only be claimed by the charity rather that the individual who has made the contribution. If it is not claimed, the money simply remains with the Revenue Service. This money could be very beneficial for young people who engage with the services of Manor St. John Youth Service. We could use it to start a new educational programme or an after school club.
How does this charity tax relief work?
The Finance Act 2001is good news for charities like Manor of St. John Youth Service in relation to tax effective giving. From the 6th of April 2001 tax relief is avaliable on donations of €250 or more in any one tax year to eligible Irish charities from both individual and corporate donors. If you are a PAYE only tax payer, and have given €250 or more in the course of a tax year, we can reclaim the tax paid on your donations.
If you are Self Assessed, then Manor of St. John Youth Service can send you a donation receipt from 2009 or 2010, which you can then return to the Irish Revenue Commissioners as proof of payment, it is then up to you if you wish to donate the tax you have claimed back.
Tax relief is applied to these donations at the donors marginal rate of tax. How the tax relief is applied depends on which taxpaying category the donor falls into. If you are on the standard rate of tax of 20%, Manor St. John Youth Service can reclaim an extra 25% of the value of your donations. For example, the full amount before tax is deducted of a donation of €250 is €312.50. The tax associated with the donation is €62.50 - this is the amount Manor St. John Youth Service can claim back to use in our work with young people.
If you are on the higher rate of 41%, Manor St. John Youth Service can reclaim an extra 70% of the value of your donations. For example, the full amount before tax is deducted of a donation of €250 is €423.73. The tax asscociated with the donation is €173.73 - this is the amount that Manor St. John Youth Service can claim back.
