JULY / AUGUST.

We had a busy Summer this year - in addition to the usual clubs and activities we had five, yes - that's right five ! summer camps. Two of the summer camps were all about using your computer to make great flyers and posters. We made posters for discos and lost dogs and put in photos we took ourselves. Our tutor for the computer summer camps was Glenn Griffin and everyone who took part enjoyed the creative buzz.

We organised three summer camps with Waterford School Completion Programme - we hiked and went to the beach, when the weather was bad we played games in the sports hall. This is the first time we have organised joint summer camps - a big shout out to the staff of the School Completion Programme -Ye were great ! We are on for next year.

Scullion & Manor St. John Young Bands Programme Benefit Concert in Garter Lane Arts Centre a Great Success ! !

The Irish supergroup Scullion played to two packed houses in Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford on May the 8th & 9th. The group, supported by bands from the Young Bands Programme, wowed the audience with a timeless set. Liam Murphy, the Arts and Entertainment critic of the 'Munster Express' wrote in his column -

"legendary folk and blues band Scullion made a most welcome return to Garter Lane and Waterford as headliners on a showcase and fundraiser for Manor St. John Young Bands Projects. It must have been fifteen years since I last heard this iconic band...They gave a full show, such an unexpected treat and an amazing long encore as well...King shone in an a capella version of an Appalachian song and the biggie from Balance And Control, Eylids In The Snow just wowed me.

March.

The Launch of the Manor St. John Youth Cafe.

Manor St John Youth Services open new Youth Space

‘Young people need somewhere to go hang and chill’ so said Kevin Power Manager of the Manor St John Youth services at the opening of the ‘manor’ youth cafe. Situated in the Community Campus ,the new youth cafe will provide a comfortable space for young people aged 16 -18 to meet  with friends. This is a joint venture   between Manor St John Youth Services and Foroige. MSJ will run and operate the youth cafe with Foroige providing support through the training of adult volunteers .The MSJ Youth Café will move to becoming a youth operated, adult mentored youth programme that provides young people with opportunities to improve their lives through education programs, self development activities, and health based wellness experiences.

The CAFE unlike a typical cafe will provide a unique location and forum for communication, information and entertainment. The provision of a comfortable meeting space is the answer to an increasing demand by young people from 16 – 18 years of age in this area said Mr. Power

“Our goal is to provide young people with a social, educational, entertaining, atmosphere through the vehicle of a youth café.”

The MSJ cafe was officially opened on Thursday last by national celebrity the young talented Jack Lynch. Who following the opening entertained the young people with his unique dance.

The formation of an environment that will bring young people with diverse interests and backgrounds together in a common space is the way forward, counteracting the often negative images of young people hanging about on streets. The cafe will initially open on Thursday evenings from 6.30 to 9.30 providing good quality non alcoholic refreshments and bakery items at a reasonable price. As the café develops it is intended to ensure that the youth space can deliver access to the resources of the health and social services in a youth friendly way

Young people will have a number of areas of responsibility in the operation of the café including: customers, event organisers, café staff, cleaning and security as well as acting as entertainers. Any young person interested in becoming involved or visiting the new youth cafe can contact Manor St John at 372169 or visiting www.manorstjohn.ie 372169

January and February -

Manor St John Youth Service (Young Bands Programme) Presents legendary Irish group  ‘Scullion ‘ with young bands and local
musicians)
On the 8th and 9th May 2008  in Garter Lane Arts Centre in Waterford City.

Legendary Irish Band 'Scullion' has agreed to reunite for two concerts in support of Manor St John Youth Service  young bands programme. “Some bands are destined to stay together, the songs a powerful cohesivein the intertwined lives of their performers. Scullion is such a band”. Wrote Siobhan Long in the, IrishTimes. Three decades on from their formative gigs together, their signature sound is as strong as ever,
maturing like a good wine, gaining depth and clarity. The voices of Sonny Condell and Philip King havetaken on a seamless harmony, pinioned by the bravura guitar playing of Robbie Overson. They’ve remained loyal to the band’s original vision and it’s recasting of folk and traditional songs withcontemporary splashes of jazz and blues colour. It’s a recipe that yielded four seminal albums, and an impressive catalogue of songwriting landmarks like Eyelids Into Snow, Down in The City and John The Baptist, that still form the backbone of their set today.
In the late 80's the band went into semi- retirement occasionally playing one off concerts while Condellconcentrated on a solo career. Philip King became a TV producer while Overson played withnumerous bands and is a much sought after session musician. “The band never stopped, we just have some periods of intense rest!” says Sonny Condell. They havedecided to take a break from the ‘rest ‘and perform in Waterford on 8th & 9th May next at Garter Lane.

The programme will include young musicians and celebrated local artists. Tickets for the concerts will be available shortly from Manor St John Youth Service and Garter Lane Box Office.
